Nothing says freedom as much as wireless speakers. Having Wi-Fi enabled speakers that support higher data rates, multi-room sync capabilities, and the ability to wander the house with a personal player means that a device no longer has to stay docked and the music and be produced at higher fidelity. Speakers is a natural area for Wi-Fi wireless enablement and connection to the IoT. A wireless speaker connected to the IoT means that any sound (recorded or live) from anywhere on the planet can be played with incredible quality anywhere that the listener wants to “listen in”. Sounds from the ocean, the city, the home, a crib, a playground, or any other soundscape can now be recorded and played in real time from anywhere around the globe. Wi-Fi Hi-Fi used to be a dream, not it has become a reality.



If speakers mean freedom from docking your device and dedicating it to audio playback, then headphones mean “privacy and freedom”. The best headphones have historically required a direct connection via the phono jack to maximize the signal clarity. With Wi-Fi based audio transmissions, people who care about high quality stereo in their headphones can count on wireless High Fidelity given the data rates and distance supported by Wi-Fi. Even more importantly, a high fidelity signal coming from an internet connected player can be played on any number of connected headphones in high fidelity. Imagine the opportunity to go into a theatre and put on headphones to block out the annoying “talkers” in the theatre to have near perfect audio while seeing the movie on the big screen. 3D headphones, if not already being designed, seem to be something to consider for theatre goers’, music recording artists, and artists that record soundscapes.



Products like Eye-Fi® opened up the possibilities to make the ability for a digital camera to have unlimited capacity for photo storage (and real time transmission to the cloud). Cameras with Wi-Fi directly integrated into the functionality and connecting the Camera to the IoT means access to even more powerful functionality, larger files, more photos, instant sharing, distributed editing, placement of HD cameras around content rich environments, and even live streaming and recording from various points of view. Monitoring and capturing rare events for photos and video become very low cost and accessible to the masses – ultimately leading to even more innovations in photo capture and production. Studies have shown that medical professionals in emergency rooms that receive images of a wreck in advance of the patient(s) arriving at the emergency room increase the odds of saving lives and being better prepared to receive the injured.


Microphones and Remote Controls

Handheld devices like performance microphones and remote controls connected to the IoT enable the ability to transmit to any device any where in the world. From speech control, presentations, device control, and universal programmability are all taken to a whole new level of sophistication. And using Wi-Fi, these can all be done in high fidelity and real time. By combining a microphone into a remote control, the handheld device allows for near universal control of any device that is also connected via IoT. In fact, the device doesn’t need many (if any) smarts embedded given that the smarts can reside in cloud based programming and connectivity. Thus, the microphone could be directed to go through a speech to text processor and the resulting text send to a medical chart, the buttons on the remote could be connected via the cloud to a light in the office, another button to a projector screen, and another button to the power switch on a projector. Another button could be set for a “profile” that did all these things with the press of a single button.


Projectors and Entertainment

Projectors and entertainment systems are all about user experience, convenience, and infinite reconfigurability. Many system configurations are limited by the numbers of inputs and outputs decided at the time of design. With IoT connectivity, any device can be connected to any other device at any time. Thus, a user can configure and reconfigure onsite (and offsite) components at will to achieve the desired experience. Consider also that online, in the cloud, the ability to bring in advanced functionality to filter, morph, modify, and “tune” audio and video is possible.


Televisions and Monitors

The whole concept of television (and video monitors) is shifting. Most smart phones, tablets, laptops, and PC’s have displays that are high enough quality to watch broadcast, cable, and recorded movies and tv shows. The addition of local storage for buffering videos make it almost impossible to tell the difference between streaming or live broadcasts. Add to the equation internet connections (wired or wireless) to Smart TV’s and the TV becomes an IoT device – able to receive most any audio or video signal and even transmit video and audio (if a camera is connected to the Smart TV). Connecting to a livestreaming video feed of an aquarium at the national zoo gives high quality video and telepresence to scenes that can be half a world away. With lifecasting rigs (which these days can be a smartphone with a live streaming app), family members can attend events (funerals, parties, weddings, graduations, and even Sunday dinner) and have live conversations without having to make the trip.

IP Cameras – Video and Audio

Widely distributed cameras with audio capability (and even pan/tilt/zoom) are enabling users to remotely monitor spaces where they care to know what is going on at all times. Whether for security, safety, curiosity, or even for monetary gain, higher bandwidth connections make way for greater resolution and higher definition video for professional looking productions. Lower cost, smaller, lower power cameras that have Wi-Fi capability have made traffic monitoring, planning, and routing more efficient. As the cost and miniaturization make higher quality video accessible to consumers, the innovative ways that cameras – video and audio – can be more fully explored. Add the ability to turn on/off LED’s and IR LED’s and dark environments can also be monitored. Dark spaces of interest include basements, crawlspaces, tunnels, attics, outside perimeters of homes, the inside of a car at night, garages, and other places where lights are naturally left off when the sun goes down. How where IP cameras end up, as miniaturized as camera elements have become, can only be limited by the imagination. Imagine the day that everything electric in the house has a camera and Wi-Fi built in by default. Connected to the IoT and cloud computing and every device in the home with image and audio recognition could anticipate your needs based on your preferences or your movements.
